Trigger Links

To start, click Email Marketing on the left menu and then click the Trigger Links tab at the top.

This opens your main Trigger Links view.

For this example, we're going to set up a sales funnel that captures leads, verifies their email, and then gives them a verified contact tag. As you can see, I've already set up a few links, but if you'd like to create a new link, simply click Add Link in the upper right.

This opens a straightforward pop-up. Fill in the fields for your trigger link name and URL and then click Save.

I've already set up our funnel, campaign, triggers, and trigger link, but let's explore each one in detail, starting with funnels.

In our CRM's funnels area, I've built a demo funnel with 3 steps to help explain how trigger links work. I'm going to open the Trigger Link Demonstration Funnel.

And once it’s open, you can see the three steps of the funnel: a Landing Page, a Thanks email, and Email Verification.

For the first step, I created a simple lead capture form using the form builder and added it to a landing page. If you'd like to learn more about your CRM's form and funnel building features, check out their respective articles.

Next up is the landing page and here it is.

When a contact fills the form and clicks Done, the funnel automatically moves to the next step, which is a thank you message. This is the second step in our funnel and it asks our contact to check their email and click the verification link.

This is the contact's complete experience, but let's look at what's happening on the backend.

On our trigger links page, you can see the link I've previously created called Verification Link. This is the same link the contact clicked and it's connected to the third step of our funnel - the verification message.

But before we go any further, let's back up and look at the overall campaign that this trigger link is connected to. I'll click Automation and then click the Campaigns tab at the top.

I’ve already created a Verified Contacts (Double Opt-in) campaign, which I'll open up now.

As you can see, this is a simple campaign with a single email event.

I'll click edit to open up the event details.

And this is the email we've composed that is sent when the contact submits the form. Note that the verification link is already added.

We embedded the link by clicking this icon.

When you click the link icon, a pop-up appears. Your trigger links are shown in the link list drop-down. And when you select one, the URL will be automatically added.

Now we’ll need to define what happens when the link is clicked, so let’s set up some trigger rules.

I'll click Triggers at the top of the Automation view, which opens up our main Triggers page. You can see that we've already created a folder for this example with two rules.

I'll click edit to open up the first trigger rule details.

This trigger rule adds new leads to the campaign whenever the Personal Info form is submitted. The Personal Info form is the same one that appears on our funnel's landing page.

Now let's go back and click edit to open the second trigger rule.

This is the rule that controls the trigger link.

In the first field, we've identified the event and told the rule to perform an action whenever a trigger link is clicked. In the second field, we've created a Trigger Link filter and selected our Verification link from the drop-down list.

Essentially, this tells our platform that something should happen every time our Verification link is clicked.

On the right side of the pop-up, we tell the rule what action to take when the Verification Link is clicked. For our example, our action is that we want to add a tag to the contact that says verified contact.

Since everything appears to be set up correctly, now is the time to test our trigger link.

I've opened the landing page URL with the form and entered some test data.

And I'll click Done to submit the form.

As expected, we receive the thank you message letting us know that a verification link has been sent to the email address provided.

Now, let's check if the email has shown up.

Sure enough, the email event sent us the email. This confirms that the first steps are working properly. We open the email and the verification link is there.

Let's click the trigger link in the email and see what happens.

Great! The link opened our verification message as expected.

The last thing we need to do is confirm that the verified contact tag was added to the contact details.

Now when we open the contact details in our platform, the verified contact tag is present. We can use this tag in the future for bulk requests or other CRM features.

Trigger links can be used in a variety of ways to automate your workflow and save you considerable time.
